The brighter way to learn

User Experience Design

Design a new app that is backed by research and solves a specific problem.

Illuminate is a fictional app designed to help elementary school teachers give parents and students easy access to resources in various subjects. Teachers generally don’t feel supported by parents when students struggle with subjects at home. Illuminate allows parents to help their children succeed in traditional subjects outside the academic setting.

The design caters to elementary school students from kindergarten to fourth grade.

The concept for Illuminate originally came from my mother’s experiences as an elementary school teacher for nearly twenty-five years. I watched my mother work hard and make attempts to go the extra mile for each of her students. When doing this, however, she ended up missing out on family activities. My mother is a hard worker and an inspiration for me. Growing up as a teacher’s kid, I watched other teachers do the same thing, staying late into the evening and working for their students to have the best experience in the classroom. I consistently heard of struggling students who needed more support and watched teachers dig through filing cabinets of physical resources they would send home with them each night. To make things easier for these hard-working teachers, I wanted to make a digital library where students can learn outside the academic setting with resources from their teachers, parents can receive updates on their student’s progress, and parents can save resources their children love. With Illuminate, teachers feel supported, parents can be up-to-date and active in their child’s academic performance, and students can succeed in their general education subjects.

Team Project with Aiman Ahmed and Xinyi Lou

With Illuminate each of us played around with different logo styles. However, once all of our sketches were side by side, we found that a mascot would be more appropriate as we are catering towards the benefit of a young audience.

That is how Lumi was born!

As the daughter of an elementary school teacher, this app was something very close to home for me.

I grew up watching my mother work late hours after school and knew that she felt stressed due to the lack of help she felt from parents of her students. She consistently spent hours outside of work looking for extra resources for them to use at home and it lead to multiple file cabinets full of paper and now a vault of work. Illuminate would make resources accessible to parents at home and make it easier for them to see how their child is doing in the classroom.

Every teacher can always use a friend on their team Lumi, Leigh, Laine and Logan are all here to help students with their general education subjects.

Illuminate makes checking a student's progress easier than ever with our progress charts, recent assignments are graded and categorized for each subject which can be viewed individually or as a whole.

Things are just as easy for teachers when it comes to uploading resources. Both digital files or physical files can be uploaded, all that is needed is the name, subject, and category. Illuminate will assign the resource to either Lumi, Leigh, Laine, or Logan depending on the subject.

Thank you to Aiman and Xinyi for all the hard work both of you put into this project.

This project is for you Kristy, thanks for everything you do
