Tell us where you’d like to go with your career as an up and coming leader in graphic design. Utilize different design and research methodologies
Haven is a collaborative space where young creatives can come and work on creative projects, attend workshops, become mentees or mentors, and earn scholarships to accredited art and design universities around the United States.
The design of the logo was inspired by the tools that creatives would use and the saying, “The sky is the limit.”
The concept of Haven Collaborative Spaces was inspired by my personal experiences as a creative growing up in a small town. I found that in the small town of Keystone Heights, Florida, creative opportunities did not exist. The academic setting in Keystone Heights wasn’t much better, causing many young creatives to put down their pencils and paintbrushes for good. As a young creative who wanted to create and design, it was disheartening to see so many others lose their spark and settle for a traditional career path, believing their creative dreams were not viable options. Furthermore, the idea that creative careers aren’t necessary within society and “starving artists” are all they lead to is an old-world ideology that needs to stay in the past. Haven not only exists to help young creatives maintain their spark but also to inform non-creatives about how creative individuals contribute to our society today.
As a graduate student, I’ve learned that I have the ability to create and design solutions that can benefit society and the world as I know it today. Haven Collaborative Spaces allows high school, college, and graduates to gather together to foster creativity in the next generation. All Haven Insiders can choose a creative path focusing on three creative fields. There are Passionate Painters, Imaginative Illustrators, Devoted Designers, and Captivating Creatives covering everything from architecture and industrial design to film and photography. Haven Insiders can explore various creative avenues, earn scholarships, enter mentorship programs with college graduates who can give insight into creative careers, and join the Haven Alum Program to keep creativity flowing in small towns for years to come.
The home of small town creativity
With Haven, I wanted to incorporate some of the tools of the trades that artists and designers would use as well as the idea that when you’re a creative the sky is the limit and we are always growing.
When trying to find what my designer story was I always said I’d love for my work to inspire designers for years to come. But as someone who grew up in a place where creativity wasn’t recognized as a viable career option, I thought of all the other friends I made in high school who weren’t able to foster their creativity.
I wanted to show that it is possible for those in small towns to spread their creative wings and soar creating new and exciting design solutions for a range of individuals.
Haven is intended for high school and college students to work in a creative space together. As a college graduate that moved back home having a dedicated space to go to study or work always helps me stay focused, gives me an opportunity to collaborate, and allows me to get feedback from designers with different points of view.
Special thanks to Mattie Elkin and Samantha Hall for being my lovely models for this project.
This is for all the creative people I met at SCAD that came from small towns just like me. Let’s make a better place for those just like us.
